About our research project

This survey is part of the project titled “Comprehensive Approaches of Area Studies on Connectivity and Innovation of Higher Education in Asia” funded by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A).

This research project is an area study that comprehensively analyzes higher education and innovation in Asia and the Pacific from two aspects: intergovernmental and interuniversity competition and cooperation. Higher education in Asia and the Pacific has its unique model that combines competition and cooperation by enhancing “connectivity” among individuals, programs, and institutions. However, the question is how has the “connectivity” enhanced international competitiveness of higher education and research in Asia and the Pacific, and contributed to the development of science and technology? This research aims to theorize these questions through qualitative and quantitative research methods, such as survey and case studies, and present a unique higher education model specific to Asia and the Pacific.

This survey is particularly designed to understand the transformations and innovations occurring in universities in Asia and the Pacific within the context of international relations and societal structures today. It aims to uncover the recent trend of “internationalization” that many universities have been actively pursuing, its current state and its impact.
